Is DHHS state or federal?

The DHHS is governed by the Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS). The Secretary’s office and the DHHS have separate staff.

What information do you need to file a complaint?

DHHS is required to provide you with information if you file a complaint. If you do file an individual complaint, you should be advised of the following:

Whether or not you have an Individualized Medical Education Plan.

The date and time that the complaint was filed.

Reason for filing the complaint.

DHHS’ response to your complaint.

What if I receive a letter from the DHHS?

DHHS’ Office of Inspector General (OIG) will send you a letter to review within 1-2 business days. You will pay the fee to review all documents as well as receive a review copy of the decision.

Does DHHS have complaints forms?

While DHHS does not routinely provide any form, we will provide you with one (1) form for you to read.

In our office in Rockville, you will be notified when a complaint receives a response or, where appropriate, a follow-up notice to make a complaint. The DHHS Office of Inspector General does not have a complaint management system. This system is available to assist with identifying potential complaints.

How will I know if my complaint has been received?

DHHS conducts periodic audits under the “A” audit program. This program is designed to detect and
