There has always been concern of the safety of medical marijuana, and the Food and Drug Administration has been watching and studying the drug very closely. The agency, however, says it has no plans to reschedule marijuana, and does not have a specific policy on it.
That does not mean, however, that the FDA does not think that marijuana deserves consideration. It is, after all, classified as a Schedule 1 Controlled Substance under the Controlled Substances Act. The F.D.A., which will make the decision about whether to reschedule marijuana next month, cites as one of its reasons for not treating marijuana as the same as any other drug that falls in it.
“Because marijuana’s Schedule 1 status creates a significant risk to children, as well as potential risks for the illegal drug market, DEA’s review of marijuana’s medical use will be thorough and thoughtful, and not take place on the basis that this drug is safer than alcohol or tobacco or has fewer health risks,” the agency says.
This story has been corrected/revised to reflect a correction that the number of deaths from Ebola has been revised downward.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has reported that it has confirmed 2295 Ebola cases in West Africa, as of Thursday. That’s double the number of cases reported on Sunday, the first day of the crisis.
The WHO issued the total figure after tracing contacts in Sierra Leone, Liberia and Guinea and checking deaths.
According to The Guardian and the NBC News network, the original estimate of 2294 cases was from the WHO. The number has been corrected as of Thursday.
At the end of last week the WHO reported that there were around 756 cases of Ebola in West Africa. At the end of 2014 there were 1.7 million cases of Ebola, with 474,000 deaths.
The report found that most cases of Ebola can kill in three to seven days of contact with infected people.
But at the height of the crisis in March, the disease had killed almost 10% of those infected, according to the CDC.
