When you decide to shoot a music video on the small screens, you’ll probably want to keep the budget close to the music video budget. You want the music video budget to be lower than your average cost for a music video (usually around 1.5 times the music video budget).
The best way to do this is by using a budget for the video you need to shoot, then spending around 1 week shooting the music video.
It’s important to have a budget in place if you want your video to look right for television. When I was shooting music videos for clients on smaller-sized screens, I always shot video about 1/3 the length for television, but the majority of the time I only shot 1/2 of the video for TV. The reason: the television screens are really small and your image is blurred. A higher resolution TV screen would allow your image to be perfectly clear.
Here’s a chart showing how the budget for each style of music video works.
Video Budget Style #Music Video Budget Style Budget Amount of Film $200,000 $200,000 – $450,000 Cost Per Screen $40 $200,000 – $450,000 Cost Per Frame $2 $80,000 – $140,000 Cost Per Second $.75 $.06 – $.16 (if shooting 24fps) Total Costs $350,000 ~$1/3 of the budget
If you’re shooting on a smaller budget, then you should still want to consider shooting the music video budget to the music video budget.
If you’re shooting for a larger TV broadcast, then a larger budget would be better. That’s because the smaller TV screens would be able to make a smoother image.
You should also bear in mind that budgets differ depending on where you are doing your shoot. A studio with an outdoor shoot might want more footage if they’re setting up a huge stage.
This all sounds like a lot of math, so I’ll use some visual examples.
I shoot for a large music video production company because our business is very small and small.
In 2011 I started shooting the music video for a new song named ‘Cherry Pie’. At first I thought that because we were using such a large budget I would have to shoot a lot of the video in a single day. I was sure I’d have a huge amount of footage to shoot in one day. If I was shooting 60 minutes I
