One of the biggest hurdles for a music video shoots is the lack of quality lenses to fit into it, although there is a fair number of options: Canon 5D Mark III, Nikon D810, Sony A7RII, Sony A6500. We’ve tried all of them and found each one to be superior to the previous one in certain things, but none of them are suitable on all occasions, and the cost may make them unattractive.
It might sound like a silly question, but we felt it necessary to explain our findings in the case of lenses for music videos:
5D Mark III with 20/1.4 lens
With its massive 21MP burst, the camera can’t be used in low light without significant impact, although a fast lens can give amazing results in the right situation.
But since I haven’t tried the Sony A6300 with high-end lenses and it doesn’t exist, we had to look outside the camera (and beyond the 5D Mark III itself).
As far as the budget cameras, the Nikon D810 is the best option, although it lacks the sensor size, and is not yet available in all parts of the globe.
Canon 5D III with 18/2.8 lens and a 24-70mm f1.8 lens with a 75-200mm f2.8 lens
The most expensive option is still the Canon 5D Mark III with the 18-55mm f2.8 L lens and a 300mm f5.6 L lens. This offers a very good image quality even with wide angle lenses, but is still limited by one thing.
The Canon 5D III with 18-55mm lens and a 300mm f5.6 L lens is the best video camera that you can buy today. With its huge 21MP burst and super-fast AF and video, it is the best choice for capturing great video in low light or still shots, and it looks beautiful when you’re playing video.
Sony A6500 with 10/55 kit zoom and 70-200mm f2.8 L lens with a 75-200mm f2.8 lens
The second very expensive option is Sony A6500 with 10/55 kit zoom and 70-200mm f2.8 L lens with a 75-200mm f2.8 lens, which offers superb videos and great images, but the price difference of $
