It’s a term that’s never been used in reference to hockey, but it means someone who is in charge of the tactics and strategies of a team.
A coach is the owner or the captain of the team, but he can’t be involved in player development and he plays second fiddle to the captain. He’s also the one that gets the most out of his players.
If you’re asked, ‘where do you see yourself in five years of coaching?’ you’ll probably say you need to win more. And that’s not a realistic answer. Some people say, ‘hey, I’m trying to get back to the playoffs and win a title.’ I’m in no way trying to get back to the playoffs. I’m trying to see how a group can get out of the Western Conference first.
If you’re a young goalie like myself and you want to improve your ability and get better, there’s no better place than to grow as a goalie because you’re going to get the opportunity to play in the playoffs. But I think a lot of guys in the NHL are good for a long time because there’s so much to learn.
So what are your future plans?
My next goal is to grow as a skater. My next goal is to come back and play with NHL players, and then to go win a Stanley Cup, and then maybe play for the Quebec Nordiques because they’ve had some good success with young players in the past.
