AUSTIN, Texas (Thursday, December 3, 2014) – The Austin Police Department has released video footage of the shooting of John Crawford III following a physical encounter with police at a Walgreens store in West Austin on Nov. 5, 2014.

In the footage, a Walgreens employee is seen exiting the store carrying a loaded handgun, and being asked by a police officer to bring in his permit and holster. The man then responds: “I don’t have a permit, I don’t have a holster.” The officer then asks him to go inside and he walks outside with the handgun.

Crawford then appears to reach for the officer’s gun by his holster before he is shot. Police say that Crawford was not armed as he did not have a holster on his hands.

According to police, Crawford was armed with a BB gun, and was shot and killed by police after he reached in the officer’s waistband. On Monday, Crawford’s family said that he was “an unarmed 22-year-old African-American man who had just purchased food, and who was merely waving the BB gun at an officer. There were no criminal acts at all.”

The family statement also said that Crawford had been “armed and was running away from officers when an officer-involved shooting occurred.”

The family statement continued, “We ask that the Austin police continue investigations and gather more facts as to what happened on November 5 in West Austin, and what has been done to rectify the situation which led to this death.”

Police have not confirmed any findings of any criminal conduct by any of the officers involved.

Crawford’s family will continue to support the police department through various legal avenues.

This is only the second time this year that citizens have been shot by police without any other weapons present during a physical encounter being conducted by police.

In August 2014, a man was shot and killed by police following a physical altercation in North Charleston, S.C. After police had stopped the man’s vehicle, officers say he pulled out a gun and began approaching them with it. The man was shot and killed.

In 2012, Terence Crutcher was killed by police after a chase in Tulsa, Okla. Crutcher was found dead in a car after police say that the driver opened fire on the officers, who were responding to a call that
