It’s a new day for the world of video games. The Nintendo Switch has been out for less than a month, but it’s already been selling like crazy. As of Monday and into Tuesday, Nintendo said that its console had sold 8.1 million units, making this year the best for the Nintendo brand in its 35-year history.
Nintendo is a well kept secret in most gaming circles, but the company has long been known as a powerful influence. The Switch has sold 3.5 million consoles, and it’s one of the best-selling video game systems of all time.
According to Nintendo itself, the Switch has already “sold nearly half a million units worldwide” since its initial worldwide launch. That’s a huge amount, considering that the original Wii sold only 2 million units.
The new console has a more affordable price than the Wii U ever did. Nintendo’s Switch costs $299, slightly lower than Sony’s and Microsoft’s. The Switch packs a 1.4 GHz Nintendo A8 chip, compared to the 1.7 and 1.9 GHz SoCs found in Microsoft’s Xbox One and Sony’s PlayStation 4, both of which cost twice as much to build.
While it’s a nice piece of technology, the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 both ship with higher-end AMD processor chips. The Switch, on the other hand, has an ARM chip built into it. This makes the Switch one of the few console manufacturers to not include a Tegra chip in its hardware.
