That question was sent in by a resident of the suburbs of Kolkata. For over a year the questions have been being sent in by people across the country and have attracted a lot of responses and debate through Twitter and other social media platforms.
Saffron and turmeric are the first two main ingredients in the Indian dish known as korma which is often served with roti. The dish also has many other variations that include mango chutney, mint chutney, coconut milk chutney, paneer paratha, potato chutney, and also the curd chutney and chutney made with curd milk.
It is not surprising then when the debate began about turmeric. People from all corners of India and around the world have put up their own spin on the dish, and a new one has been launched on Indicus in a bid to help the Indian people have their answers.
One popular Indian breakfast dish, roti is made by steaming a thick mixture of onion, tomato, curry leaves, and rice and then simmering slowly for 1.5 hours over a low flame until the rice is tender. The combination of the tomato and curry leaves gives the roti its name.
According to one Indian blogger, “It is time to get our answers. This is what turmeric does. Turmeric is the perfect ingredient for mixing with food. Not only it is good for digestion but also a fantastic source of natural sources of iron. Just think of it like adding a good serving of the Indian rice to the pot in which your roti is being cooked. It helps the roti achieve that lovely consistency it needs for perfect eating. It turns a mild greenish colour and is extremely pleasant to the tongue.”
Another Indian blogger, Sangeeta Chaudhry who lives in Jaipur, wrote on social media that turmeric gives turmeric it’s unique taste as well as is known for its antiviral benefits. “Turmeric gives turmeric a unique taste as it can help fight viral infections”, she wrote.
