That’s true. It actually feels like saffron, a colorless green. It doesn’t really taste “turmeric flavored,” though – it’s more like a mild spice.
Is it healthy?
Taste tests suggest it can have potentially beneficial nutritional benefits. The active compounds in turmeric, known as turpinin and other botanicals, may be helpful in treating a host of illnesses, including inflammation.
Are there any health effects?
Turmeric has many medicinal properties, many of which, including anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial, anti-fungal, antioxidant, and anti-bacterial. It does have a modest level of caffeine, though. It is low on the FDA’s Drug Interactions database.
Tests show that it actually does not contain cyanide (as per the product’s label, and as in all powdered or pure turmeric products). It does not contain any phenylalanine (phenacin) either. There is a slight, but insignificant, level of tannins (from the tumeric), and a very slight level of polyphenols (from the black pepper). It does contain some other compounds (maltodextrin and other sugars and hydrolyzed proteins).
It tastes almost exactly like turmeric, except it has slightly more color than turmeric. The only things that could be considered a minor difference are in the amount of turpinin and the amount of tannins.
Is it safe?
Turmeric does appear to be safe in the amounts that you would get through regular food. Turpinin and other botanicals may have some benefit, but it’s likely that for most people, it would be in lower doses than what they typically consume in their diet.
There are some safety concerns of turmeric, though. In the lab, turmeric appears to kill many bacteria with ease. That’s very different than it killing normal bacteria. And turpinin, like most botanicals, has an extremely brief shelf life. So, you should eat it immediately after it’s been ground up and used in a dish, but do not keep any of it in the refrigerator.
