How many strands of saffron should I use? – Saffron Planting Density

Most Indian curry powders contain 20 to 23 grams of dry saffron, of which 2 to 3 millilitres (or 0.005 cups) are the powder’s essential oil. That means that if, for example, you’re after a very light curry, a 20-gram bag of saffron will still contain enough oil to flavor and even slightly color your dish. But to use every last drop of oil, you’ll still need a minimum of 6 grams of saffron powder. This is also the case for other Indian creams, such as garam masala and cumin curry. And so many spices are extracted for culinary purposes that it’s best if they’re completely unscented.

Can I also serve my saffron curry with coconut milk or yogurt?

A few Indian curry powders will also go well with dairy products, such as yogurt, coconut milk-based spreads (such as the pakoras or ajaan , among others) and a few Indian curry sauces (sambar). But we recommend that you never, ever use sour cream in your saffron curry.

What are the best foods to use and how much is too much?

We’re always talking about taste, from Indian cuisine to vegetarian dishes, but we do acknowledge that too much may be bad for you. To ensure you get the most nutritional value from your dish, your spice of choice makes the biggest difference, and you must use only those spices that we recommend using. Here are a few things to consider if you’re adding or removing a spice.

1) When preparing a dish, be smart about the spice mix. A spice mix of turmeric, coriander or coriander seeds, cumin seeds, red chillies, sesame seeds or hot coriander seeds, for example, will add no nutritional value to a dish. Instead, you want to add the purest spices, such as cumin, red chilli and coriander seeds.

2) Your favorite spices may already impart their flavor to certain vegetables, such as onion, ginger, cauliflower or spinach, in the cooking process. When you add these to your curry, be sure to taste and don’t get overwhelmed by its delicious flavor. For more flavor, go easy on the ground spices.

3) Avoid using too many of your favorite spices. You’ll want to keep adding smaller amounts (1 to 3 grams of an aroma-rich spice per cup
