Both are extremely powerful anti-malarial drugs, both are high in fiber, both are high in protein and are both highly valued in traditional Ayurvedic medicine and both are used by traditional Ayurveda practitioners.
I have mentioned turmeric numerous times in this blog, but today’s post is more focused on saffron.
Saffron is an ancient spice that grew in India around 850 BC. While it is the same spice that was used in Ayurvedic medicine for centuries, there are a few key differences between saffron and turmeric. For starters, turmeric has a pungent smell, which makes it easier to smell and understand. Also in traditional Indian medicine, saffron was thought to be an all-purpose spice that the body absorbed easily and in large quantities.
Saffron is a wonderful spice to take in when you are out shopping for a special dish; it also lends its medicinal effects with great ease. Here are some simple ways to prepare saffron and turmeric in your kitchen.
Saffron in a Noodle Bowl
Making a spice box using saffron and turmeric with some rice can be fun. In this recipe, I added 1 cup of plain wheat noodles (any kind) to the package of saffron. This is a great appetizer, so be sure to double-dry and cut up your noodles before adding the saffron and turmeric to taste, otherwise you could end up with a super dry batch of noodles. Then toss with some fresh chopped cilantro.
