The question of how to make a living as an architect has come up a lot, and often the answer is one of the most confusing ones, and that is how easy they are to get.
Anecdotal evidence suggests that even someone as experienced as an architect can find it difficult to get a job they actually like—and not just when it comes to working at one of their favorite firms.
On The Craft, the web’s most popular podcast, former interior designer and author of Building Better Bodies, Rachel Krant, tells her story of trying to get an architectural job despite an abundance of experience. In fact, she was told not to even apply.
“There were people telling me I’d never get hired at something, and I was just being lied to. It was such a bad feeling to go back and find out that that wasn’t happening,” Krant says.

She was told to stop thinking about jobs and start doing other things.
“When I found out it was all about not only having an architect I could relate to — and I really didn’t find much of that at all — but also about their job and how they were able to work their way to their clients and still be in a good spot for themselves at the end of the day, it was so much better,” she says. “It was much less like being told I’d never get a job, and much more like I’d never be able to afford that job, and be able to survive, and not be like a deadbeat aunt or uncle anymore, because we would be in this really good spot.”
“Anecdotal evidence says that even someone as experienced as an architect can find it difficult to get a job they actually like — and not just when it comes to working at one of their favorite firms,” Krant continues. “You can be a pretty good architect, and it’s not always at the top of the list, and so you’re
