Sprint CEO Marcelo Claure is at an event in Las Vegas, Nev., Thursday where he revealed that his company is spending $45 million to acquire Vodafone’s stake in the country’s fastest-growing metro area, Kansas City.
In a company announcement, the three-time Sprint-owner says that Vodafone is providing the Sprint Network with an upgrade for the “lowest” of three frequencies to increase its network “speed” to 50Mbp/n, which is the most congested, and will also offer Vodafone’s customers “100% guaranteed” call quality.
“Today, Sprint announced a strategic investment of a combined $45 million into Vodafone’s Vodafone Smart Mobility network, offering one of the fastest LTE LTE networks in the country,” Claure said in a statement. “We’ll use the new technology to provide enhanced speeds, better service and greater value to customers.”
He’s talking about Sprint’s new LTE Plus network offering, which offers customers faster LTE and faster upload and download speeds at a higher cost than the Sprint 4G network. The Sprint LTE Plus network upgrade will provide up to 4x the network speed with 2x faster download speeds compared to the current Sprint 4G network.
Sprint already has a 5GHz, 5GHz+ network in Kansas City, which has provided better speeds than the existing 2.4GHz coverage in Kansas City.
According to Claure, Sprint customers will be able to upgrade to Sprint’s new 5GHz, 5GHz+ network faster than before thanks to this latest network upgrade.
In addition to Sprint, Vodafone operates in Kansas, Missouri, Louisiana, Texas and Alabama. Vodafone owns Sprint, and the acquisition makes Vodafone the third largest U.S. carrier by revenue, behind Verizon and AT&T.
Vodafone also owns the French telecom company Orange, which competes with the Sprint-owned T-Mobile. Vodafone also owns the Spanish mobile carrier Telefónica, and the Spanish mobile operator Telefónica De Valencia.
Sprint will not be offering Vodafone’s new mobile plans to the average T-Mobile customer, said Claure. Sprint has over 200 million customers,
